A Forager's Raw Wild Garlic Hummus

I love the whole 'foraging' thing, although to date, I've only really foraged nettle tops and berries. Last night, I was reading one of my favourite blogs Eat Weeds - A Forager's Wild Food Guide to the Edible Plants of Britain which is written by Robin Harford who's based here in the UK.

We've featured one of Robin's articles here before - Rose Hips: How to Dry & Store For Rose Hip Tea (non-members use this link) and here's another one that I simply have to share with you - this time, a Houmous recipe...

Now, Lucy-Ann includes several delicious Hummus/Houmous recipes in the core DB365 eProgram (Members only) - each one with its own little twist - so honestly, I thought I'd seen pretty much every Hummus option going, but no... I've never seen one made with foraged Wild Garlic or Ramsons as its known elsewhere.

What's Wild Garlic/Ramsons? Well, if you've ever walked through dampish, wooded areas and noticed a pungent garlicky scent hanging in the air, it was probably Wild Garlic. It often thrives near bluebells as they like the same conditions, but wild garlic's flowers are white and sort of raggedy or feathery from afar and it's the leaves you use - typically, you'd add them to a salad or a marinade. Here's a close up pic on Wikipedia and I took the above photo a few week's back which I've also posted in my Photo Gallery... but now, ladies and gents, I give you:

Robin Harford's recipe for Raw Wild Garlic/Ramsons Houmous.

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

What DailyBread365 is NOT

One of the DailyBread365 members has been blogging some of her experiences of the DailyBread365 365-day e-program. I recently wrote to her to see how she was getting on. I would like to share with you all, my thoughts regarding her recent post. My words are not only for the ears (and eyes) of this particular lady, but also for all those individuals who have similar, and very real health and weight loss challenges. In fact I hope this helps each and every one of you on your own special journeys to greater health, and happiness…

Day 80 and A Little Embarrassed…
I recently received a letter from Lucy-Ann of DailyBread365.com asking if I would be interested in writing an update of my progress since starting with DB365. As you can see from the title of this article I have been… continue reading here…
http://thinkingaboutlosingweight.com/thinking-right/day-80-and-little-embarrased

My response…
I would like to begin by clarifying the important point that DailyBread365 is not a weight loss program. Certainly, it incorporates sound strategies and advise for effective fat loss (not simply weight loss), but it’s major aim (and what appears to be the experience of most individuals who have completed all, or even part of the year-long e-mail program), is heightened awareness of daily habits, actions and thoughts, new learning on all aspects of health and well-being, plenty of practical food and meal ideas to help put “nutritional theory into practise”, lifestyle tips and strategies, and an overall increase in self-knowledge, self-acceptance, and for some, and increase in self-confidence too.

Each and every one of us is on a different “life journey”, experiencing different physical challenges, emotional & mental challenges, and spiritual challenges too. I believe we all have a special, or unique “purpose” or path, and the more we stray or divert away from this, the more stress and unhappiness we encounter. Good health and happiness go in hand-in-hand, and weight loss incidentally is often a welcomed side effect of this. It is very difficult to be truly happy, when our health is compromised. This happens in reverse too! Personally, if I feel out of sorts or unwell, which thankfully is rare these days, I tend not to care for myself in the best way I could. Happiness has to begin with being happy with ourselves - happy with who we, what we are, and what we can give. As Alan Cohen says, “Our bodies know how to be healthy and happy. All you need to do is to cooperate with its wisdom”.

DailyBread365 touches on all aspects of health – physical health, mental and emotional health, and spiritual health too. As the author of the DailyBread365 e-mail program, I try to encourage, support and teach members to be aware of their food choices, to make the best food and lifestyle choices whenever they can, and enjoy food and life as best, and as much as possible! Soul Food (weekly motivational and inspirational sayings) are an often-expressed “favourite” part of the program, and of course, so are the delicious, and yes…“tempting” food ideas that so many of you love!

What DailyBread365 is NOT!
DailyBread365 is not a magic bullet to overnight weight loss or a sudden shift in health or attitude - although this does happen as many experience “light bulb moments” when light and wisdom suddenly appears to guide them! Weight loss and better health is however a happy consequence for many who do the necessary learning and reading, and the vital “putting into practise” of what they learn.

To achieve anything in life, we must take action, and take action consistently, however small those actions may be. Change is the result of small baby changes, done on a consistent basis. This pattern of “doing” builds self-confidence and self-belief, which in turns build self-worth and happiness, and before you know it… energy and vibrancy.

Our experiences in this lifetime are a result of our daily habits, and our daily thoughts. We ARE what we think, say and do. Those experiences may be “success” or stagnation in our endeavours. There is no right or wrong… simply what IS. There is nothing or no one to blame for where we are in our lives. We are all the experience of ourselves.

If we want to change, we have to decide, that “this change” is what we truly want. We can ask for any necessary help and guidance (which is always close by), and then, we must take action. No one can do, or take action for someone else. The responsibility for ourselves comes down to us, and us alone. In the context of DailyBread365, I can only encourage, inform, and hopefully inspire others… I can not “do” for another. If that were possible, I would do the learning and take from that, a new experience… not the person who needs it most!

Keep going Susan, and others in similar situations. Love who you are. Forgive who you are, and know that you can, and believe that you can do anything that you really, really want.

If you would like to comment, or share some of your “words of wisdom”, please do express them. I am always learning in how best to serve, and help the DailyBread365 community, which encompasses learning from you! DailyBread365 is not a magic bullet, but I do believe that a great many people will learn, and begin to experience valuable information that will take them 1, 2 or 100 steps forward in their journeys to better health and, I dearly hope, to more happiness too!

I’d recommend you read an “old” DailyBread article “Crucial elements of human health”, to remind yourself of what true health really is…

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 medium cloves garlic
2 tsp lemon juice
Sea salt or rock salt, & black pepper to taste

Chop finely or press the garlic cloves, and then combine with all the other ingredients. Whisk with a fork if you're using a bowl, or put all the ingredients into a jar. Shake well, and then the dressing is ready to use!

12 Days of Xmas - Day 12 - And finally...

Day 12

Let’s end the 12 days of Xmas, by looking back at all the wonderful, positive and outright “healthy” aspects of Christmas, as well as now look forward to an exciting New Year - 2009!

As we all think about resuming "normality" and routine on Monday - if you haven't already done so - we can be truly grateful for necessary "rest", time spent and opportunities to catch up with friends (old and new), see the family and spend quality time with them, and maybe socialise with work colleagues on a different level?

Christmas has been a time to give and receive, and now we have a perfect opportunity to reflect and reassess our paths and priorities in life - and decide what we want to happen in 09.

So, let’s bring these aspects of the past few weeks more to our conscious awareness and look ahead to a very healthy and Happy New Year!

Decide today, just how healthy and happy you want your 2009 to be. Make your intentions strong, and simply go forth and take action!

Happy New Year to you all!

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

12 Days of Xmas - Day 11 - Dealing with a cold!

Day 11

This time of year is notorious for runny noses, coughs, flu and generally feeling pretty “bunged up”!

There are certain foods, which encourage persistent mucus formation in many susceptible people, so avoid milk, cheese, cream, and ice cream during this time, but especially if you have a cold! Other dietary-related causes of congestion include excess sugar and sweets in the diet, eating too much or too large a meal late at night, too much bread, pastries and yeast-based foods (especially when there’s an underlying yeast infection or wheat/gluten/grain intolerance), too much fried food and drinking too much alcohol – particularly beer and wine.

Feast on the following “anti-mucus foods”…

Fresh lemon, chopped fresh ginger root (amazing at releasing and clearing mucus) lots of green leafy vegetables, ground cinnamon and ground ginger (which help “dry” excess mucus), chilli (fresh or ground), black pepper, cumin, fenugreek and other spices. Eat warm and light foods such as vegetable soups, a big raw salad, and drink hot herb leaf teas – with your lemon and ginger!

Try the following homemade tea and sip throughout the day…

Chop an inch or so of fresh root ginger, discarding any peel as necessary. Put in a mug or teapot, with ½ tsp of organic fennel seeds, and a slice of fresh lemon. Fill the mug or pot with hot water, and let steep for 2-3 minutes for a delicious warming, immune-boosting tea!

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

12 Days of Xmas - Day 10 - Make a daily “immune boosting” salad lunch

Day 10

This time of year is undoubtedly the most “infectious”, and boosting your intake of some simple everyday foods will help you to stay healthy, and ensure you don’t end up celebrating New Year in bed!

For lunchtime salads - choose deep green leaves as a base (watercress, finely shredded kale and cabbage, rocket or baby spinach) some chopped raw fennel, cucumber, vitamin C-rich tomatoes and sweet peppers, immune-boosting onion, mushrooms and sliced raw courgette, and finish with adding ½ sliced avocado for extra vitamin E.

You can also add some “spice therapy” to your salad, as well as to all the meals you prepare for the coming New Year! Use a variety of fresh and dried herbs and spices in cooking such as ginger, parsley, thyme, lemon thyme, rosemary, and garlic – all great immune-boosters. Ginger and garlic are easy to use, and very helpful to the immune system, as is turmeric, cumin, basil, coriander, cardamom, and black pepper.

N.B. For taste, it’s fine to use pre-ground spices, but for real “therapy” and medicinal purposes, try to buy organic whole seeds and grind or beat them with a pestle and mortar. Fresh root ginger and garlic are very easy to use, and have some amazing therapeutic properties. Both are extremely helpful in enhancing immune function, as are turmeric, cumin, basil, coriander, cardamom, and black pepper.

Some other things to think about to keep your immune system strong…

Keep your stress levels in check! Take some time out for yourself daily - do some activity, journal your thoughts, and take moments during the day to STOP, breathe in slowly for 4 counts and out for 4 counts. And… SMILE!

Watch your sugar intake! Excess sugar depresses the immune system so follow all the food tips you’ve been given in recent days! When I say “sugar”, I mean unnecessary added or refined sugars such as white sugar, biscuits, cakes, sugared cereals, pastries, chocolates, puddings - and of course the left-over Xmas cake and mince pies!

Tomorrow I will you give some tips on how to deal with a cold, or overcoming the problem of excess mucus - stay tuned!

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

12 Days of Xmas - Day 9 - Tips to avoid stress and balance your hormones!

Day 9

The following strategies are great for all year round, but particularly useful when the extra stresses of Xmas can play havoc with your hormones!

* Eat within one hour of waking! One of the most critical underlying systems associated with “balanced” hormones is ensuring your blood sugar levels stay balanced. Not eating, or leaving long periods between meals is not good news! When blood sugar levels plummet, the body goes into stress, and levels of cortisol rise. Elevated cortisol upsets sex hormone balance, making you feel edgy, unhappy or low in energy. This simple strategy will begin the day on the right note! Choose 1-2 pieces of fresh fruit, a freshly made juice or smoothie, or some scrambled or boiled eggs. If you like to immediately exercise when you get up – go for it! Just ensure you eat some fruit when you’ve finished!

* Ensure you are adding the equivalent of 1 tbsp of quality "oil" into your diet every day, in the form of EITHER 1/2 and avocado, a piece of oily fish such as wild salmon, trout, mackerel or sardines, 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseeds, a small handful of walnuts, almonds, pumpkin or sunflower seeds. This "food oil" addition will feed your body with the right food substances that produce your adrenal hormones, sex hormones and thyroid hormones - all of which work "in synergy" to create healthy (and happy) hormone balance!

* Avoid stressing your body with processed foods. Eat and enjoy foods created by "Mother Nature" - NOT foods created by a factory! Natural wholefoods contain all the nutrients, fibres and plant chemicals that feed your cells, tissues, organs and metabolism correctly, and re-alkalise and “balance” the body in order to produce boundless energy!

* Last, but not in the slightest, the least - Get enough sleep! You will know just how much sleep you specifically need, as the right amount leaves you feeling refreshed, energised and "healed"! Respect the importance of sleep for mental and physical regeneration, and you will be a healthier, less stressed, more productive and a happier person for it!

P.S. Evidence shows that the most regenerative sleep we can benefit from is during the hours BEFORE midnight!

12 Days of Xmas - Day 8 - Count your blessings!

Day 8

Here is another simple and quick way to instantly feel cherished, and if need be, lift any flagging spirits - post Xmas!

Keeping in the spirit of “The 12 Days of Xmas”, list 12 things that you are most grateful for this Christmas.

We all have many things in our lives to be thankful for - aside from all the presents we have just received! Many "little things" can easily get forgotten or simply go un-noticed! Reminding ourselves of all the friends we have, family members who love and support us, a bed to sleep in, children, pets, or the elderly to nurture and care for, a job to go to, food to eat, bodies to move in, voices with which to express ourselves – all these truly help us come right back to the present moment of being alive, and being thankful just for that.

Carry with you today and everyday, “An attitude of gratitude”! There’s no doubt that a grateful heart attracts far more joy, love, and prosperity into your life!

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

12 Days of Xmas - Day 6 - Healthy food alternatives at Christmas…

There is nothing stopping you having some different and healthy options available this Christmas, for you and for your guests. Don’t assume that everyone wants the usual Christmas fare, and likewise, don’t assume they don’t!

* Cook a wide variety of vegetables this Christmas! Choose fennel, cabbage, onion, courgettes, squashes, pumpkin, carrots, brocolli, cauliflower, and of course… Brussels sprouts!

* Avoid boiling vegetables and instead lightly steam them, lightly roast, or lightly stir-fry them. Cook with a variety of herbs and spices such as thyme, rosemary, ginger, fennel, cumin, cardamom, or coriander. This adds flavour, aids digestion, and healing and therapeutic properties to the food!

* Consider a large mixed salad for starters, or as a “help yourself” dish on the table. Try grating some raw winter vegetables such as beetroot, pumpkin or other winter squash, celeriac or turnip. “Ground” these raw salads with an oil and vinegar-based dressing, or Tamari. Adding cider vinegar or lemon juice to salads also helps to stimulate digestion!

* Make a hearty homemade vegetable soup on a regular basis. Homemade soups using root vegetables, beans and leafy greens, are cleansing, filling, and perfect for times when we need to eat “lightly”, but want something warm and nourishing too.

* Keep a good supply a fresh fruits available to snack, and to begin the day with. Fresh fruit is the ideal start to any day. Choose clementines, oranges, grapefruits, apples, kiwis, pears, grapes, or plums. You can also leave freshly cracked nuts at hand, such as pecans, or walnuts.

* Serve fresh fish instead of meat on occasion. Sea bass is in season at this time of year. Bass is a fish that most people love, as it’s a meaty, white fish, and delicious when grilled or baked.

* Serve an alternative tea such as homemade mint tea, with ginger and honey! This is perfect to drink after a heavy “Xmas meal”!

Happy Xmas everybody!

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

12 Days of Xmas - Day 5 - How to avoid Christmas weight gain!

Day 5

It’s thought that a vast majority of people gain anywhere between 1 and 10 pounds of body fat over Christmas and New Year! Why do think gyms and fitness clubs are inundated in January! However, you DO NOT need to be one of those people on the New Year merry-go-round of attempting another weight loss resolution!

Weight gain during this festive “party” season is not obligatory! If you can successfully use the following 4 useful tips each day throughout Xmas, you’ll avoid putting on unnecessary extra pounds. You might even find you carry them through to the New Year, and beyond, helping you toward achieving any resolution that you want.

Before you read any of these tips, it is good idea to begin with a strong, firm intention of how you want feel and function through Xmas, and most importantly how do you want to feel for 2009. This will help to re-program your subconscious mind, and un-do some old non-serving beliefs that you might have about yourself.

Try saying the following out loud, and then write this intention down, reading it everyday…

“I intend to be in the best shape EVER for 2009. I intend to feel healthy, energetic, let go of old patterns of behaviour, and welcome a new vibrant way of living and being. I AM WORTHY OF THIS, I CAN DO THIS AND I VOW TO DO THIS”.

Congratulations – you’re half way there already!

Tip 1 - The is the simplest yet MOST effective advise I can give you to keep your appetite in check, keep your weight in check AND lose weight if necessary... Start eating when you feel slightly hungry. STOP eating BEFORE you feel full - SIMPLE! This might culminate in 3, 4, or 5 small meals through the day, OR 2 meals and 2 snacks. Find what works for YOU - not anyone else. If you constantly crave sugary foods, make sure you eat enough protein at each meal, and make your snacks protein-based - i.e. a boiled egg, a handful of seeds, or a pot of plain yogurt.

Tip 2 – Start your day with a fresh fruit breakfast instead of your cereal or toast. Chop into a bowl a large apple, a pear, and either a small banana or handful of grapes for some extra “sweetness”! Starting the day with fresh fruit is remarkably cleansing and energising. Fresh fruits are nutrient-rich and help to immediately alkalise the body – perfect for the Xmas period!

Tip 3 – Do some activity for ½ hour EVERDAY – yes everyday! This will help enormously to keep the metabolism stimulated, and so help to use up any excess calories from Xmas treats! You will also feel healthier, far more energised, take the necessary “time out” to de-stress and see you through the holidays. You’ll also feel more confident and empowered that you are treating yourself and your body with the care and respect it so deserves! Choose from a walk, hike, cycle, swim, dance class, Pilates class, or kick a football with the children!

Tip 4 – Substitute potatoes and bread this holiday, for PLENTY of extra vegetables and salads!

Tomorrow I will give you some alternative healthy Christmas fare ready for Boxing Day and beyond!

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

12 days of Xmas - Day 4 - How to successfully approach parties, party food and Christmas buffets

Day 4

There are Christmas parties, Christmas dinners, Christmas drinks, more Christmas parties, and of course… the big Christmas lunch! Fear not… there are ways to keep you and your diet healthy during this Christmas season, avoiding the painful months of January and onwards, often spent paying for the consequences of over-indulging.

1) Keep “moderation” in mind. I mean it! I know it’s easy to say, and not so easy to do, but I can honestly say, if you learn to be more aware of your true hunger and satiety (fullness) signals and act upon them… you will safely stay in your normal weight range, whilst still enjoying Xmas “treats”. Try and eat only when you are hungry, but more importantly, stop eating when you feel satisfied, not when you are stuffed! It is often the simplest of strategies that work best.

2) If you find yourself standing in front a buffet, avoid picking up a large plate! Choose a small plate, choose foods wisely, and make a “once-only” visit.

3) DO NOT GO TO A PARTY OR DINNER FUNCTION STARVING! This is a recipe for disaster, as there’s every chance that you will over-eat, or justify to your self that you “deserve” a second helping! Start the day with a healthy breakfast (fresh fruit or scrambled eggs spring to mind), eat a healthy lunch too, and you will approach the evening in a more “moderate” way.

4) Where there are many choices of foods of offer… you do not have to eat everything there! Be wise in your choices, and if you are watching your weight, steer clear of deep fried foods, noticeably high-fat foods and dips, and desserts.

5) Move away from the buffet table once you’ve finished eating. At the dinner table and at parties, immerse yourself with friends in conversation… after all; this is what celebrating is all about!

6) If you are drinking alcohol, drink a glass of water in between each glass of alcohol. This is a very healthy habit to get into, as it not only hydrates the body and therefore minimises the morning after effect, it stops you drinking so much alcohol, and helps clear the body of toxic excesses!

7) Plan in advance: Make a clear verbal or written contract with yourself before attending a party or celebration and ask yourself the following questions… How do I want to approach this evening? How do I want to feel tomorrow? What do I have to do or accomplish tomorrow? How many more parties have I got this week? What is my body saying to me?”

Be nice to your body! It will certainly thank you for it in the weeks to come!

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

"12 Days" Day 2 - How to enjoy Christmas goodies, & still manage sweet cravings and over-indulgence

Day 2

How to enjoy Christmas goodies, and still manage sweet cravings and over-indulgence!

Christmas time is full of wonderful goodies such as mince pies, biscuits, nuts and chocolates galore! As a child, I remember this was the one time of year, when big tins of biscuits and assorted chocolates, and boxes of nuts and dried fruits arrived in the post from afar - and were left open for everyone to indulge in and enjoy - which of course we did! But what if, as a adult, you're someone who wants to enjoy these delights, in moderation, but struggle with intense sweet cravings, a "lack of control" around food, and/or rollercoaster energy, mood swings or poor hormonal balance.

Well, fear not, for the Angel of Cravings is upon us, to guide us on our way!

Firstly, remember that sugar cravings are far more to do with mismanaged or uncontrolled blood sugar levels, than they are to do having little or no will power! If your blood sugar levels are behaving like a roller coaster, no amount of will power in the world will stop you diving into the biscuit tin! Start now with the following tips before the mince pies and chocolates hit the scene this Xmas, and you’ll be better in control of cravings and over-indulgence.

* Avoid getting too hungry - this is the number one cause of low blood sugar. Lack of food causes stress hormone levels to rise, leading to blood sugar imbalances, sugar cravings, and fat gain!

* Eat every 2-3 hours, focusing on fresh, whole foods, and drink enough plain water through the day – it is that simple!

* Eating enough "healthy fat" each day from foods such as ½ avocado, a piece of oily fish such as salmon, or a handful of sunflower or pumpkin seeds, or soaked whole almonds. This will help enormously to balance blood sugar levels, and stop you feeling over-hungry.

* Get sufficient protein in the diet! This will ensure you maintain steady blood sugar levels, with the added advantage of maintaining your LEAN muscle and helping to boost your metabolism. Protein-based snacks kill cravings, so choose a handful of nuts or seeds, a few slices of turkey, a pot of plain yogurt, or simply nibble on raw veggies such as carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, sugar snap peas, or mange tout.

* Drink plenty of pure, filtered, bottled or spring water throughout the day, between your meals and snacks, and remember to add a slice a lemon or lime. This helps to hydrate and alkalise the body, improves energy, and helps the body to burn body fat. Drink enough until you notice your urine is a pale yellow colour - this means you are fully hydrated!

* On a day-to-day basis, choose fresh colourful, fibre-rich carbohydrates such as courgette, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot, swede, sweet peppers, squash, peas, turnips, carrots and aubergine.

Stay tuned for Day 3 - coming tomorrow!

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

12 Days to a Healthy and Happy Xmas and New Year - Day 1

Everyday, from today until New Year's Eve, I'll be guiding you and helping you stay healthy AND happy over the holiday season!

DAY 1 - How to avoid the Xmas “tension headache”

There is no doubt that Xmas can be as stressful as it is wonderful! The build up especially can put pressure on many of us, and “tension headaches” may begin to rear their ugly head!

Here are some quick tips to alleviate, or stop a nasty headache in its tracks!

Firstly, sit down in a quiet place and try the following acupressure techniques for great results!

Apply pressure to any of the following Acupressure points…

1) The “Third Eye” – a point situated directly between your eyebrows, in the indentation where the bridge of your nose meets your forehead. Apply firm pressure, stroke upwards and outwards across the forehead, and then massage the point for 2-3 minutes.

2) Find some painful “trigger” points at the base of skull, and again, apply pressure and gently massage the area until you feel relief.

3) Find the point located on the crease of the inside of the wrist, in line with the little finger. Apply pressure and then gently massage in small circular movements.

4) Find the point on the top of the middle finger, just below the nail, on the side closest to the thumb. Apply pressure and then gently massage in small circular movements.

Remember the following general advise too…

* If a headache comes on, immediately drink a glass of water to rehydrate and re-alkalise your body’s cells! This can work wonders!

* Have your blood sugar levels plummeted? If so, eat a piece of fruit such as an apple. Maintain your blood sugar levels by eating regularly, and eating “wholefoods”.

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

What do John Cleese and I have in common?

Well, aside from both being British, not much else I don't imagine... BUT the character that John Cleese plays in the movie, "Man About Town" and "yours truly" actually have a whole LOT in common. Let me explain...

I recently watched "Man About Town", a movie starring one of my favourite comedy actors, John Cleese, and the rather gorgeous Ben Affleck. It's one of those "easy to watch" feel-good films, full of life's usual ups and downs, family dramas, life's lessons, struggles, challenges, and successes. It actually has rather a good story line (which kind of suprised me), and some "running" themes, such as learning to forgive, and stepping aside from one's "ego" - both enormously important gifts to have, in order to truly be ourselves, and therefore be genuinely content in our lives, and content with who we are. Affleck's character, Jack, finds all this out - and often the hard way!

So what about Cleese's character - and myself?

Well... Cleese plays a rather stereo-typical eccentric English professor, running an "Adult Ed" evening "writing" class. One of his new class members is Jack, a successful Hollywood agent, whose life, underneath the surface is anything but "happy and glamorous". The first exercise he gives the class is to "Begin a Daily Journal"!

The rest of the film transpires as Jack begins to journal his life - past and present. He naturally finds this very difficult at first, but something which he ultimately discovers is the "key" to him finding real, genuine happiness, love and success with the most important person in the world - himself! However, let's not be under any illusions here! This journey for Jack, is certainly not an easy one! It's not meant to be - for Jack OR any real-life person - and he's often thrown off track, and "tested to the hilt".

Armed with some very genuine and heartfelt reasons as to why he didn't complete 3 weeks of journalling in time for his next class, "The Professor" is having none of it! ....

He expresses the following words to Jack (in typical Cleese and almost "Basil Faulty" style), at the same time as he's furiously scribbling them on his blackboard...

"I am here to teach you, and show you, how to un-cover, dis-cover, AND dis-card the things that are holding you back"!

In that ONE sentence... not only did he reveal to Jack his "answer", he described so beautifully the "ESSENCE" of DailyBread365!!

It is THIS, dear readers, that John Cleese and I have in common! We both know the amazing benefits of a step-by-step journey, taken only by ourselves, and revealed only by ourselves, and the part, and power that journalling can play, as well as support and teaching along the way!

Keeping a daily journal is an early, and essential, part of DailyBread365, and enables you to "reveal" thoughts, habits, challenges, strategies, and "new learning" so that YOU can move forward, and uncover, discover and discard anything that is holding you back from the life, the health, and the body you want.

If you haven't already done so, sign-up NOW, or upgrade to the FULL Dailybread365 e-program, and begin a journey that I promise will change your thoughts, ideas, habits, and knowledge about yourself and your life, enabling you to lead a happier, healthier, and more balanced life, and one in which you are supported all the way - by "yours truly" - not John Cleese!

My very best wishes to you all,

Food Sensitivities or Intolerances? Try this 'DIY' test...

There’s an assortment of tests nowadays to diagnose food sensitivities, also known as food intolerances. Many of these high street or laboratory tests are however very expensive, and due to the changing nature of our environments, our emotions and our bodies, no test can ever be 100% reliable.

Getting to know your body better, and learning to recognise the signals it gives you in response to a food or drink, is very beneficial, and certainly wise, before spending your hard-earned money on a test. This very simple “do-it-yourself method” is very useful indeed, and can be an excellent indicator of how a food (or drink) might be affecting your body.

The Pulse Test is a traditional way of diagnosing food sensitivities and helps to determine potential problem foods. Learning to take your pulse at rest and then monitoring its pattern and rate at different times around eating “suspect” foods, provides great insight in your body’s reactions to things you eat and drink, as well as to your emotions and environment.

How to take your pulse
The pulse is best found on the carotid artery, in the neck or throat area, just underneath the jaw.

Press the first 2 fingers gently on the artery until you pick up the beat of the pulse. Count the beats in a 10 second count and multiply by 6 to get the beats per minute.

Practice taking your pulse before you get out of bed in the morning, to get an idea of your true resting pulse rate. This also gives you a good indication of your cardiovascular fitness. A “normal” or healthy pulse rate is between 60-80. Generally speaking, the fitter you are, the lower the pulse will be. Elite athletes often report resting pulse rates as low as 40 beats per minute, but even those who simply exercise regularly will see their pulse rates come down to a healthy 50-60 bpm range.

Once you have gotten familiar with taking your pulse and have a good idea of your average resting pulse rate, try The Pulse Test to determine any food sensitivities…

The Pulse Test
Take your pulse before you eat or drink anything. It’s likely to be slightly higher than the first morning pulse you’ve been taking. Take your pulse again, 20 minutes after ingesting ONE suspect food. Test ONE food at a time, so avoid eating anything else with the food you want some information about. If your pulse has risen 10-15 beats, or it’s “racing”, your body may well be reacting negatively to that food. Re-test the same food several times on different days, to get a clearer “Yes” or “No” answer from your body.

If you’re sure that a reaction happens regularly, try removing the offending food from your diet for at least a week. Gauge the effect this has on your digestive function, your energy levels or your body weight.

Food sensitivities can impact health, energy and digestion in a number of ways. If you regularly suffer with bloating, poor energy (especially after food), headaches, or have dark circles under the eyes, skin rashes, frequent nasal congestion or runny nose, try experimenting with The Pulse Test.

Common offenders in the diet include cow’s milk, wheat products, sugar, coffee, canned drinks, or chocolate.

The Pulse Test is not an exact method and doesn’t register delayed reactions to a food. In it, I talked about the detrimental effects that negative thoughts and emotions can have on the physical body (as well as the mind). The following extract explains the >sheer power of thought, and how this affects us on both an individual level, AND on a collecctive level. It might just clarify further this idea or notion for some of you - it certainly "cemented" it into me!

"In his book 'Power vs Force', David Hawkins calibrates people's emotions from levels 20 up to 1000. 20 being Shame which is perilously close to death. At the other end of the scale at 700-1000 is enlightenment.

All levels (which could be classed as vibration levels) below 200 are said to be energy draining and vary from Guilt (30), Grief (75), Fear (100) up to Pride (175).

At the 200 level, power first appears. Courage (200) is the zone of exploration, accomplishment, fortitude, and determination. People at this level put back into the world as much energy as they take; at the lower levels, populations as well as individuals drain energy from society without reciprocating.

Further levels include willingness (310), Acceptance (350) and Love (500).

Interesting facts from the book...

* 85% of the human race calibrates below the critical level of 200.

* The overall average level of human consciousness stands at 207.

* The power of the few individuals at the top counterbalances the weakness of the masses.

* 1 individual at level 300 counterbalances 90,000 individuals below level 200

* 1 individual at level 700 counterbalances 70 million individuals below level 200

In other words, our thoughts not only influence ourselves, they influence others too! If you vibrate at 200 and above you will be helping to raise the consciousness of mankind, and you'll play a big part in creating a better world for all of us."

I find the whole area of "quantum physics" fascinating, and it goes to show just how powerful our minds really are! We must all try our best to think only positive, happy and uplifting thoughts, however "trite" or simplisitc that might sound!

If you're thinking to yourself, how can I possibly think happy thoughts when x, y, z is going on in my life and in the world at large? Well why not simply practice turning some of your repetitive unhelpful thoughts around. I believe that just as it takes practice and perservence to change anything we are not used to doing routinely - we need first to be aware and observe the fact that what we are doing (or thinking) is not serving us. Then, we must believe that we have to power to change, and in doing so, set about taking baby steps in a forward direction. We must practice a new thought or behaviour until it becomes a welcome and positive habit in our lives! Following DailyBread365 is a GRAND example of this don't you think?!

If that seems too much to contemplate right now, simply allow yourself to become more inquisitive, hopeful, courageous and determined in life. According to David Hawkins research, this in itself creates a very positive and "high vibrational" energy that not only benefits YOU (the individual), but it benefits us all! I think that is SO cool!

We really do have power over what we think in any given moment. So when a challenging situtation presents itself, or you catch yourself thinking negatively, or you're feeling low or negative toward yourself, commit to changing that. Commit to thinking and speaking only positive, or happy thoughts to yourself, AND others, and I guarantee it will put a big smile on your face!

Happy thoughts and love to one and all!!

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

Here is a great winter warming barley soup from Pukka Herbs, that I really wanted to share with you all today! It is called "The Immune Tonic Soup" to help keep you healthy and bug-free through the winter:

50g barley
2 carrots diced
2 beetroots diced
150g kale
seaweed (kombu arame)
10 shitake mushrooms cut into quarters
1 inch fresh ginger finely chopped
1 clove garlic finely chopped
1 tsp of Ashwagandha herb (or 2 capsules)

Gently fry the garlic and ginger in a little oil. Add the remaining ingredients, 1 litre of boiling water and simmer for 2 hours.

Nice and simple! Incidentally if you don't have the renowned Ayurvedic herb Ashwagandha to hand (!!), why not throw in a large handful of fresh winter herbs such as oregano, flat leaf parsley, lemon thyme and bay leaf. Great cuisine requires a great imagination don't you think?!

Lucy-Ann Prideaux MSc BSc RNutr
www.DailyBread365.com
365 days to a Healthier, Happier, Leaner YOU!

Online success with better health and weight loss!

Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden have found some interesting facts about those seeking weight loss success with web-based programmes! And it's all good news! It seems that all the advantages of joining member-based groups on the web (e.g. low-cost, 24-hour access, "buddy" support on forums, and easy delivery of information) is just what people need!

This study assessed the outcomes of over 4000 members of a Swedish website, 86% of which were female, with an average age of 40 (+/- 11.5 years). Nearly a third of all users lost 5-10% of their bodyweight... so for a 10 stone women, this equates to 7-14 lbs, and for a 14 stone woman this would equate to between 10-20 lbs - very significant indeed!
